Safe space: a comfortable shelter for education

International Charitable Foundation “Alliance of Public Health”

Scope of implementation:
Kharkiv region

The project created a modern, comfortable and safe shelter for children and adults of the Vilkhiv community of Kharkiv district of Kharkiv region. His task was to meet the security requirements of wartime and restore the ability to learn offline, communicate and be in an environment that supports and protects.

How was it?

Vilkhiv community suffered significant destruction: three educational institutions were completely destroyed, two damaged. An initiative group of parents, together with educators, psychologists and community representatives, determined what the space should be so that it is child-friendly. Also, the initiative group together with the Agency developed a concept: multifunctional furniture, division into areas for study, play and recreation, equipment for reducing anxiety. Furniture, touch chairs, light tables and mobile boards were delivered and mounted, and some of the work was done by the parents themselves, which reinforced community and responsibility.

Impressive results

The shelter meets modern safety and comfort requirements and is designed for a simultaneous stay of 150 people. But one of the main things is that the educational process from September 1 can resume partially offline - for the first time in more than three years of war. The space has become not only a shelter, but also a place of learning, creativity, interaction and psychological recovery. The project brought the community together: parents, teachers and local authorities worked together at every stage.

Challenges and Achievements

The biggest challenge is the delivery of furniture to the frontline region, a delay of one batch for three weeks. The team deliberately chose a local manufacturer, supporting entrepreneurs who work despite the shelling. An important lesson was to involve children in the process of creating a space - this helps to take into account their needs and make the space friendly. The main achievement of which we are always proud is the cohesion of the community, which together has created a safe and functional space that serves both protection and development.

Impact on the community

The project brought life back to the damaged educational space and gave children and adults a sense of security. Children became less anxious, had the opportunity to play and learn together, and the space became a hub of support, hope and interaction for the whole community.

What left this project?

Comfortable and safe shelter that will serve hundreds of children and adults. Educational space that reduces stress and promotes development. New experience of community, parents and authorities working together. An example for other frontline communities: even small initiatives can significantly improve the quality of life.
