Illuminated street is a safe environment

In Vilshany and Yaroshivka of Solonytsivska territorial community of Kharkiv district of Kharkiv region, evenings became brighter and safer thanks to the joint initiative of the residents of the community. The Public Health Alliance International Charitable Foundation has been committed to supporting local initiatives, and we at the Agency have added the strength and experience to help bring this idea to fruition. The project aims to provide safe lighting for every resident of the community.

How was it?

Working on the project was a real team story. The initiative group of residents was actively involved in planning and control, a facilitator from the “Public Health Alliance” supported the process and shared experience. Together we solved challenges, from tenders to technical nuances, and at the same time felt supported by the community. Each step gave a small sigh of confidence: the idea lives and we make it real.

Impressive results

4,863 residents (1,621 families) received safe lighting.

An autonomous street lighting system with solar-powered lamps and supports has been installed.

Challenges and Achievements

Work on the project showed how difficult it is to adapt to all the realities on the ground. For example, it was necessary to select just the right height for the supports so that the lighting works efficiently, taking into account local conditions and safety. But most importantly, we realized that this challenge is part of the road. This is just one dangerous intersection, and there are a lot of such places in the community. But this does not stop us, we will continue to work, step by step, to make the life of the community safer.

Impact on the community

Residents felt that their needs were important to the authorities and partners. Confidence in local authorities increased, participation in public initiatives intensified. People have become more cohesive, supportive of each other, and feel in a safer and more comfortable environment.

What left this project?

The project left the streets illuminated, the community more united and confident, and the team with invaluable experience in planning, budgeting and working with initiative people. Now we know for sure: together you can change the life of the community for the better.
